Montgomery Chooses Final CreateAthon Recipient

Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA) was chosen by the public as LWT’s seventh CreateAthon client for 2011.

Montgomery, Alabama – July 25th, 2011 – LWT, a Montgomery-based marketing and interactive firm, will work with seven area non-profits during their 2011 CreateAthon™. Ala. unemployment rate jumps to 9.9 percent in June

The unemployment rate in Alabama climbed to 9.9 percent in June, up from 9.6 percent the previous month.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees said he was disappointed in the new figures, but said the aftermath of the April tornadoes is still a major factor in the climbing rate.

June's rate represents 213,975 unemployed people, compared to 206,578 the previous month and 197,780 in June 2010, according to ADIR.

"We still have hundreds of Alabamians unemployed as a direct result of the tornadoes of last April and the national unemployment rate also continues to rise," Surtees said.

New twist in immigration controversy

One provision of the new immigration law allows police to check immigration status during a traffic stop, something Olivia Turner finds thoroughly 'unconstitutional' and wrong.

"This law will invite rampant discrimination," said Turner.

One of the champions of Alabama's new immigration law disagrees.

The Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives Mike Hubbard said in this statement released to WSFA 12 News today:

"Make no mistake, this lawsuit will not undo Alabama's immigration law. If the court finds problems with parts of the law, tweaks can be made. But Alabama is not going to be a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants. Alabama will have a strict immigration law and we will enforce it."

The Speaker was just as adamant a few days ago while addressing a local civic club.

"The operative word here is 'illegal' and somehow that's gotten lost," Hubbard said.

FEMA help still available even as registration ends

One day after registration for federal assistance for the April tornadoes has ended, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is still an active part of the recovery team in Alabama. Close to 88,000 households registered for FEMA assistance and we're urging them to stay in touch with us to monitor the progress of their applications, provide new contact information or appeal a FEMA decision. Applicants can call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362).

The phone lines are open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. Applications can also be tracked on the Web site www.DisasterAssistance.gov. See the attached news release for more information.

Approved federal assistance in the state is close to $138 million, including more than $65 million in FEMA grants and close to $73 million in low-interest disaster loans provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
